We’ve been here before. We’ve overcome more. And we’ll overcome this.
We’ve been here before. We’ve overcome more. And we’ll overcome this.
We don’t say that lightly—we mean it. History shows us that progress is often met with resistance. After the abolition of slavery, Reconstruction transformed life for Black Americans, only to be followed by Jim Crow laws designed to undo that progress. Yet, we found a way through.
So what makes the difference?
People like you. Those who refuse to abandon equity and anti-racism efforts, who say, “We will find a way.”
Not because it’s easy, but because “if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.” - James Baldwin
Choose Your Response
We don’t control every barrier put in our way, but we do control how we respond. History shows us that progress is met with resistance, but resistance has never stopped those committed to justice. Decide how you’ll keep moving forward:
✔️ Stay the course.
If you’re doing anti-racist, anti-bias work, keep going until you’re forced to stop. Document your impact so you’re ready to pick up where you left off.
✔️ Be subversive.
If banned words limit your message, use new language to say the same thing. If resources are taken down, republish them elsewhere. If funding requires removing DEIA language, adapt and still do the work.
✔️ Get strategic.
You’re not alone. Many organizations are pushing forward. Find allies, collaborate, and resist isolation. The goal of these policies is to overwhelm and disorganize, so stay focused on what’s within your control.
✔️ Choose your consequence.
Uncertainty is high. Some choices will come with risk, so decide where you’ll take the hit and where you’ll double down. Don’t let these changes happen to you. Own your response.
✔️ Find joy.
Sustained resistance requires rest and hope. Joy is an act of defiance. Do something that fills your cup daily. Step away from the doomscrolling. And in the words of Mr. Rogers, “Look for the helpers.” Then become one.
Pick one. Take action. Keep going.
